Holy Family Colts JRLFC Inc. was founded in 1992 as a direct result of the Holy Family Primary School entering teams in the Cronulla Sutherland Schoolboys Knockout Competition that year. Sheree Stubley’s efforts in organising those teams led to an interest being shown by families within the school to have “their own” football club. As a result, Leicester Ramsay and Peter Stubley (later to become the Club’s first President and Vice President respectively commenced the groundwork to establish a club.
After several months of research, the Club’s initial meeting was held at the Holy Family Primary School in September 1992 to determine whether sufficient parent support would be forthcoming to make the club feasible. The response was overwhelming, and it was full steam ahead. Barrie Price joined Leicester and Peter to formulate a submission for entry into the Cronulla Sutherland Junior Rugby League. The Club was formally accepted in November 1992 to commence playing from 1993.
Plenty of hard work, meetings and fund raising commenced by a willing but small group of people, including Peter Guinane, Ken Fitzgerald, Terry Turner, Frank Iacono, Mick Bridgeman, Ian Johnson, Allan Holmes, Lou DeBiasi, Peter Evans and Maurie Carr, which resulted in a well-designed uniform, a home ground, a major sponsor (Century 21 Menai Real Estate) and a Club name amongst the early achievements.
By the time the 1993 season commenced, the Colts were able to enter 8 teams – far in excess of its initial estimation. In the ensuing 13 seasons the Club has grown significantly, expanding its membership throughout the Menai District, and achieved many highlights, some of which are recorded below.
Off the field, the Club has established a fun-filled culture for social events, which over the years have included Rock& Roll Night, Black & White Night, MASH Party, Beach Party, “B” Night, Trivia Nights, Movie Nights, Golf Days, Sponsor’s Parties, Dinner Dances at the Haldon Street function centre, U/6 & U/7 nights & Coach’s & Manager’s nights.
There have also been some significant events in the Club’s short history which include a name change to Aquinas & Holy Family Colts Junior Rugby League Club Incorporated (1997), Council approval of a Club House development (1997), a change in Club Jerseys (1999), winning the Cronulla Sutherland Junior Rugby League Club of the Year (1996), Most Improved Team (10A-1997 and 10A 1999), invitations to our Under 7’s to play in the Tommy Bishop Shield (1994, 1995, 1998,2000,2002, 2004 & 2005). Cronulla Sutherland Junior Club Championship (2000), and Development of the Clubhouse at Blaxland Oval (2001).
There have been major developments over the last few years, in 2003 the opening of the clubhouse was a tremendous boost for the club. The dedication of Kevin Redman, Peter Stubley, Ken Fitzgerald & Terry Turner to see this huge project through to the end was monumental. Also in 2003, we secured our first senior premiership, winning the A Reserve competition, which really put us on the map as a senior club. 2004 saw the addition of the upstairs bar & the extension of the rear storeroom, which enabled us to introduce our Gymnasium. This year 2005, saw the U/11A’s take out the competition commencement of the Colt’s website & the planning for our third change in Club Jersey, which will be introduced in 2006 and our U/7 Tommy Bishop Shield team become the first Cronulla representative for 18 years to make the Final.
The Club has also been leading the way on the adoption of women's rugby league. The journey was pioneered in 2016 with the first Girls League Touch team which migrated into League Tag in 2018. The community of women playing in the club has rapidly expanded to over 120 registered in 2022. In 2023, the club is entering its first League Tackle team into competition, which we believe will be the continuation of a great journey for girls at the Colts.
